Terry and Kathy Siebert have owned their Dale Carnegie franchise, which they operate under the name of Siebert Associates Inc., in Madison, WI since 1996. Prior to purchasing the location, they had managed it. Learn why they chose to make the move from franchise employee to owner and what their experience has been like.

Prior to purchasing the Dale Carnegie franchise you did, you managed it. Why did you decide to invest in it? Having operated the territory as a Manager since 1989, we had a very solid idea of what it took to succeed as a Dale Carnegie franchisee. The transition from manager to franchisee was almost seamless. We already were very familiar with the senior leadership of Dale Carnegie & Associates and felt 100% comfortable signing our franchise agreement.

What is your advice for a prospective franchise buyer?  It’s important to have a passion for the business you are buying. There will definitely some long days and nights. Without the real desire to make the business successful, it could become difficult. Also, have a solid sense of what it takes to run your own business and work in a business–to-business environment. Without my previous business background, this would have been much more of a challenge.

What experience do you have that has helped you be successful as a Dale Carnegie franchisee? Terry was in the hospitality business. In addition to being a successful restaurant operator, he was responsible for all real estate and marketing activities for a regional restaurant company. He had his own advertising agency for about five years before joining Dale Carnegie Training on a full-time basis and had already been instructing Dale Carnegie Training courses as an avocational trainer. Kathy’s background was in nursing and it was a natural transition for her to help and build people from another perspective.
