Kevin Hershock Flipped His Experience Into Owning Five Hungry Howie's Pizza Locations
Kevin Hershock worked for another pizza company for 12 years before opening his first Hungry Howie’s Pizza. He now owns five locations and received the brand’s "Build the Brand Award" for being a franchisee who demonstrates great strength in marketing and operations to ensure ultimate customer satisfaction. He shared his franchising experience with Franchise Business Review.
What specific business advice do you have for franchisees when it comes to succeeding in franchising? There are a couple of things you must do to be a successful franchisee. First, be involved in your business. Never let yourself believe that the business will function just as well whether you are involved in day to day operations or not. Nobody should care about your business more than you. Second, believe in your franchisor and follow the guidelines that have been set by them to succeed. Take advantage of everything that your franchisor has to offer from training, marketing, tech support, and any other general business knowledge. You bought into the system for a reason. Believe in that system.

What are you most proud of overall when it comes to your career in franchising? That in every town where we have a Hungry Howie’s franchise, we are a valued part of the community. Everyone who works in our system takes great pride in not only serving the best pizza around and giving great service, but also in being a part of the community itself. We encourage our managers and staff to get involved in many different ways from school fundraisers, charity events, donating to people in need, local parades, sports teams, and many other events. Working together for a cause helps the community and makes our staff understand that they can help make a difference.
How did you enter franchising and what was it about Hungry Howie’s that appealed to you? I worked for another pizza company for 12 years prior to opening up my first Hungry Howie’s. I was working long hours everyday and thought that if I was going to be working that much that I might as well try to own my own store and work for myself. The original company I worked for was no longer expanding in Michigan, which was where I wanted to stay. A friend of mine had opened a few Hungry Howie’s locations and suggested that I look into that. I had always loved Hungry Howie’s food and the flavored crust was something that set it apart from the competition, so it was a bit of a no brainer. I could open stores in Michigan with a company that was on the rise, had a system that I believed in, and didn't cost an arm and a leg to get a store open. The opportunity for expansion was important to me.
