What type of business experience, education, and/or skills did you have prior to becoming a franchisee that you found particularly helpful?
Having joined the Melting Pot as a server while attending the University of Virginia allowed me to fully understand the culture of the Melting Pot and the importance of providing each guest with the Perfect Night Out.
What do you like most about your job?
The best part of my job is seeing someone experience fondue for the first time. They leave really enjoying the dining style and the conversational environment it provides. The connection with the guests and building those relationships is what has made me successful in this company.
How did you fund your franchise?
When the opportunity arose to purchase the Richmond Melting Pot, my partner, Brian Tunney, and I contacted the bank for a Small Business Association loan. This was a longer than expected process, but it was worth all the effort.
What do you wish you had known prior to going into franchising?
I wish I would have had more experience marketing and some general bookkeeping software knowledge. Learning those two things have been the biggest challenges but have helped me meet others within the company and many local business partners.
What advice do you have for prospective franchise buyers?
Spreading the love and tradition of fondue has become a long-term goal for me. Locally, we target younger audiences to invite them to celebrate straight A’s, perfect attendance, and even first dates or prom dinner with us. Remember, buying a restaurant is a long-term investment, so I start by investing in the younger guests.
