We look for candidates that are entrepreneurs. Many have had professional careers and are looking to own their own business. Others have owned their own businesses and are looking to either diversify or start something new. Often, they have a spouse that has a job with benefits that allows them to take the risk in starting a new business. We have many husband-and-wife ownership groups that run their restaurants together.
We look for people that are hard working and share in our core values. Restaurant experience is preferred; however, it is not required.
As a family-owned company, Cousins has an approachable leadership team that understands the challenges that franchisees encounter because we operate our own restaurants unlike many competitors in the sandwich segment.
When changes in the restaurants are necessary, they are tested in corporate locations first. The results are then presented to the franchise community with a deep understanding of the impact on the operations of the restaurant and the affects to the bottom-line.
In 2016, Cousins implemented a rebranding campaign to streamline the look and feel of all locations through updating its footprint with new in-store and exterior design concepts and reimagining key brand attributes. This required significant reinvestment in many restaurants that were 20+ years old in our system. Corporate led the way and with buy-in from the franchise community 62% of the restaurants have been remodeled over the past five years.
In 2018, Cousins purchased a new Point of Sale System for every location in the Cousins Subs system. The rollout of the POS system is just one of many investments Cousins has made to help its corporate and franchise-owned restaurants bolster its technology infrastructure both online and in-store.
Over the last few years, Cousins has built a new responsive consumer site with a more user-friendly experience that better aligns with the brand through text and design, a franchise development website that more accurately communicates the brand story and growth strategy to potential franchise partners, and a mobile ordering app that offers increased functionality.
Cousins Subs offers a 25-day training program that consists of 5-day classroom training and 20 days in-store. Our Training Team also provides training and support for 4 days pre-opening and 10 days after the grand opening of a new restaurant.
All new franchisees and their employees have access to the Cousins online training platform called CousinsU. Franchisees can track the progress of a new employee as they complete each section in the CousinsU training platform. CousinsU utilizes short videos and quizzes to make sure employees understand the information that is provided within each online course.
At the Cousins Subs Support Center, franchisees and their staff can attend workshops that include, Learning to Lead, Day in a life of a Manager, ServSafe, GM Workshop, Bread Baking, and Shake Machine cleaning/maintenance.
The Cousins Operations Manual provides in-depth details into the operations of our restaurants. In addition, we provide Implementation guides, product specs, Data Central (for sales and inventory analysis), POS guides, and nutritional information. We offer extensive ongoing support to our franchisees with Business Consultants that can assist them with anything they need.
Cousins Subs is a Wisconsin based, family-owned sub sandwich restaurant company that was established in 1972. Cousins has approximately 100 restaurants throughout Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. About one third of the restaurants are operated corporately and the rest are franchised with 43% operated by multi-unit franchisees.
Cousins Subs has had a proven track record of success for almost 50 years. Each Cousins restaurant is equipped with a flat-top grill, shake machine and fryer to offer diverse menu options not found at other sub sandwich restaurants.
Cousins Subs serves up made to order grilled and deli-fresh subs using only the freshest ingredients on its signature bread baked daily in every restaurant. In addition to our premium subs, Cousins offers a variety of sides including chips, fries, Wisconsin cheese curds, mac & cheese, soups, cookies, and shakes. Any sub can be ordered without bread on a bowl of mixed greens with a variety of dressings.
Cousins Subs has an inhouse Marketing Team to help franchisees with anything they need for local store marketing initiatives. Our team works with franchisees to implement their local store marketing plan and supports them with our graphic designers that can create unique artwork for events or fund raisers that franchisees host in their restaurants. When two or more locations are open in a market, a marketing Co-op is created, and our Marketing Team works with the franchisees to pool their local store marketing dollars and helps them to spend those dollars throughout each year.
Our Marketing Team also works with an agency to create television commercials and social media commercials to promote new products and drive sales. Creative for the commercials is funded through our National Ad Fund that all franchisees and corporate locations pay in to. In addition, they manage all digital and social media accounts and respond to comments guests leave online. Our loyalty program is also managed by our Marketing Team and is used to drive transactions when weather or other events may impact sales negatively.
Most of our franchisees actively manage their restaurants. Multi-Unit operators have general managers that run their restaurants, but they still are hands-on in managing the business. The owner will typically hire employees, train them, work on local store marketing initiatives and manage the business on a daily basis.
The average cost to build a restaurant is around $475K. 6% Royalty, 2% Ad Fund, 3% Local Store Marketing
