A Baltimore native currently residing in Harford County, Don transitioned from a successful 23-year career as Director of Sales at Pitney Bowes into franchise ownership after his wife’s courageous battle with breast cancer inspired a desire for meaningful work. His franchise journey has been deeply rewarding, enriched by the steadfast support of his family, including his wife and two sons, who share his passion for caregiving.

In a few sentences, please tell us a little about yourself!
Born and raised in Baltimore City, and currently living in the Forest Hill area of Harford County. I met my wife at a high school dance, married her, and we have two sons, Paul and Jack, who both work for us. Prior to joining Right at Home, I served as Director of Sales for Pitney Bowes for nearly 23 years. I enjoy playing golf and attending Baltimore Orioles games.
What made you decide to look into purchasing a franchise?
My wife was a stay-at-home mom for close to 15 years, and she was ready to get back into the workforce. Unfortunately, at the same time, she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and brought a new meaning to our lives. She survived her battle with this and felt that she wanted to do something fulfilling.
Our close friends were at Right at Home and suggested we look into becoming a franchise owner. We decided to join the Right at Home family, and our journey has had many peaks and valleys, bringing numerous challenges to our family. However, after spending many days working long hours and experiencing moments of frustration, we persevered through our dedication to our clients and ourselves. Now, looking back, it was the best decision we could have made, because as parents, we see our children share the same value in taking care of people.
Financing can be an obstacle and/or intimidating factor for aspiring entrepreneurs. How did you find financing options to purchase your franchise?
The financing element in starting a business can be very intimidating; however, our financial situation allowed us to address this. However, in the beginning, there were many sacrifices we made, for example, vacations and changes to our social life, that helped with this. I utilized some of the funds from my 401 (k) and my financial investments to provide the capital to start the company. I was also purchasing things in a very “frugal” manner.
How does the franchisor support and encourage your success?
Right at Home provided a Right Start manager and a plan that really helped guide me in the beginning. From what the square footage of my office should be to where to buy office furniture, these tips were very helpful. Franchisor support is something that more new owners should take advantage of, despite their previous business experience. It provided a path and a timeline that matched our finances, so we could grow the business while the revenue was slowly building up.
What are you most proud of and why?
In the beginning, starting a company can be very stressful, not only for yourself, but, more importantly, for your entire family. Our decision to pursue this dream impacted our family in many ways, but they stood right by our side and gave us the confidence that it was going to work out. I am proud of my wife and our two sons. Without their support, I am not sure this dream would have become a reality.
What advice would you give to new or potential franchise buyers?
The best advice I can give someone would be to keep realistic goals and keep your strategy simple. Do not seek instant gratification, but understand that challenges lie ahead. Trust the blood, sweat, and tears you put into this journey to achieve your ultimate goals.
