When Rachel Wommack decided to open her own business, she knew she wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. As a registered nurse with years of experience in elder care, she was passionate about creating a home care agency that prioritized compassion and personalized service. Investing in A Place At Home allowed her to align with a brand that shared her values, while also providing the resources and support she needed to get started quickly. In this article, Rachel shares her journey as a franchise owner and the challenges she’s overcome to make a lasting impact on her community.
Why did you start A Place At Home franchise rather than an independent business?
I wanted to buy into an established brand that followed my personal and professional values and had the resources available to me as a startup. Starting up independently would not have been as quick or cost-effective. Due to the urgency of need during the pandemic, I was looking to start as soon as possible.
Were you focused on a specific industry or brand from the start?
I knew many years ago that I wanted to eventually have my own home care agency. I found A Place At Home through an excellent Franchise Consultant.
Which of your prior skills and experiences are most helpful in operating your A Place At Home business?
Being a registered nurse with many years of experience in elder care and management helped me most when operating my A Place At Home franchise.
When researching franchises to buy, what criteria mattered to you most?
I found that most franchises in this industry have no personal touch. You are a number, and good luck getting the support you need after initial training. A Place At Home is a family.
During your research, which questions did you ask A Place At Home Franchise Owners?
The franchise owners I talked to were all very helpful and encouraging. I asked about training, application ease of use, overall happiness with the brand, and support.
Which questions did you ask A Place At Home leadership?
I asked about processes, legal forms, failure rates, etc.
What were your biggest challenges when you first started out, and how did you overcome them?
When I first started out, I dove right into completing all the basic startup subscriptions and licensing and learned basic accounting processes, rules, and regulations for my state.
How does A Place At Home support and encourage your success?
My franchisor supports me with weekly calls, availability of franchise staff for questions, and constant contact with other owners through group chats for pertinent discussions.
What are you most proud of and why?
I am most proud of being able to care for those in need, mainly those without family or friends to keep them at home for as long as it is safe to do so.
What advice would you give to new or potential A Place At Home franchise buyers?
Do your research. Choose wisely. This is a long-term relationship.
