The green industry had always been Mike Kirk’s passion, but he got sidetracked by a 13-year career in accounting and finance and administration. He opened his U.S. Lawns franchise in Northeast Mississippi in 2001 and shares his franchising experience with Franchise Business Review.
What tips do you have for succeeding in franchising?
After researching their business model and talking with other franchise owners, I knew I wanted to be a part of their franchise organization. My only regret is that I didn't find them sooner.
How did you enter franchising? I have a degree in accounting from Ole Miss and worked in the accounting and finance and administration field for 13 years before being caught up in a corporate America downsizing that eliminated by job. While growing up, I was taught to work and began mowing yards while in junior high school. Since I was too young to have a driver’s license, my first customers were neighbors who lived close enough to my parents that I could ride my dad's mower to their homes. I enjoyed the experience and often wished that I had chosen the green industry as my career. I saw my job being eliminated as an opportunity to pursue my passion, while using my formal education to strengthen my business.
I started an independent landscape business and ran it for three years before I learned about U.S. Lawns. After researching their business model and talking with other franchise owners, I knew I wanted to be a part of their franchise organization. My only regret is that I didn't find them sooner. It continues to be an amazing ride and I am very grateful that I have the opportunity to call them my family.
